Glenn at Lake Tahoe Again!
I have been to Lake Tahoe several times now. This time I didn't really mean to. I just took the road that goes down the western side of the lake. It's sort of true, what they say about Tahoe, it has two seasons -- Winter and Road Construction. It is too crowded. Every time I go to Lake Tahoe, I assume it will be the last time I go to Lake Tahoe. Who knows, I could cross that path again.
They changed the name of Squaw Valley to Palisades Tahoe. I'm sort of offended by that. As much as Sheldon Cooper, in the sitcom, dreams that the World is binary, the World is not binary. Some people think that using Native American language to name American places is cultural appropriation and that it is offense to Native Americans. I suppose for some people it is offensive, but I reckon there is a spectrum of emotions involved. On the other hand, doesn't the use of Native American language recognize that Native Americans were here first and pays respect to indigenous people. Removing Native American language from modern English speaking culture disrespects history. There are a lot of things in the US with Spanish language. Can you imagine the outcry if politicians used language translation software to relabel the map of the Southwest? There is a hot spring spa in New Mexico called "Ojo Caliente" that is pretty nice. It would be a shame if politics caused the name to change to "Hot Eye". Language isn't oppressive.
Next rant: I can see why the Dust Bowl generation was attracted to California. The is a lot to like about what is out here. But the fact is they left behind a mess in the great plains. The mess was largely of their own making. They turned the ground upside down, the dirt blew, and they left. Since I'm on rant. They made a mess of California too. The coast was over developed and filled with smog. The reaction was to over politicize their World. An article came up on a new feed this morning that talks about the California law regarding people crossing the street. Sorry, cars are hurling pieces of machinery. The laws of Nature suggest that people shouldn't step out in front of them. California is absurd; the World is absurd. And, now I see why people in California, including myself, want to make their way to Texas. It's pretty messed up there too.
Stay tooned! (I meant to spell it that way.) I'm planning to blog about how my motorcycling odyssey is sort of like the Apollo moon program.
